A Pavillion clock for Southwell School.

Southwell School, is an independent school set in 32 acres of park-like grounds in central Hamilton, New Zealand.

The School had recently commissioned a new Sports Pavillion which was being built by donation to the school.

Architects designed the building with a clock pride of place - it was only a matter of time before Southwell School made contact with Paceracer to build a clock for the facia of their new Pavillion to time close to the opening date.

Stage 1. How the Pavillion Clock came to be

Southwell Inquiry: May 2023

“Hi there,
Southwell is an Independent day and boarding school in Hamilton.
We are wanting to install a 70cm - 80cm Outdoor analogue clock on a new Sports Pavillion which is currently being built at School and due for completion in May /June”

Following the inquiry, we contacted the school & described the clock options while the Pavillion was described to us.

Southwell:

“Hi B**
Thanks for chatting to J**and I this morning.
We are really keen for you to draft up some options for us based on the 70cm large analogue outdoor clock.
I have attached:
1. The 3D render of the Sports Pavillion which shows where the clock will be positioned.
2. Our black and white logo (jpeg and a vector file).
Please let me know if you require any further information.
I look forward to hearing from you again.”

We delved right into research & then concept design. Soon we would present the concept designs.

Stage 2. Commission & design process

Paceracer:

“This clock will be proudly New Zealand-made & designed for you and your Sports Pavilion. Over the years the design will stand the test of time, and become a memorable asset to the School.
With a design in mind, your logo & a piece of personalized text will be made clearly visible and will enhance the overall design.
Below are three quotations for your reference
Firstly, after inspecting the architecture of the facia & angled roof, it is going to be important to use the Hinge. There are a number of reasons why & I'd be happy to explain further.
Secondly, the raised lettering would give a very striking look”

Southwell:

“Excellent work - thanks for your prompt reply.
We are very excited to let you know we would like to proceed - are you able to please prepare a formal invoice.
Do you have specs for the builders requirements prior to installation?”

Paceracer:

“This should come through after lunch or later in the afternoon.
Noted on the specs. Most likely no building work will need to take place as the bracket mounts sturdy onto the facia.”

Southwell:

“Thanks B**,
That has all been signed off and approved.
J**has arranged for the deposit to be paid this Friday and then we can commence the design mock-ups.
We think we may like 3 mock ups - all with white face and black numbers and hands.
1. White rim
2. Black rim
3. Resene Bokara Grey Rim (this is the color of the weatherboards).

Stage 3. Manufacture & Fabrication

Southwell:

“Hi B**,
Fabulous - Decision made .
Could we please go with the 2nd image (with the 1911 above the dials) - see attached.
I have also attached an ai vector file of the Southwell Logo which hopefully is good to use.”

Stage 4. Detailing

After we cut the frame from solid metal, bend it, roll it, route it, join it & weld it. We add the details which make it striking.

Stage 5. Assembly

Once the clock frame is ready & the details have been applied, it is time to assemble the product to include the mechanism, bezel & attach the Paceracer black polished hands with counterweights.

Stage 6. Installation of the Sports Pavillion clock

The clock was installed on a fog-filled morning, ready for the afternoon football game between students & teachers.

Execution is everything & a detailed design process, manufacture stages, and finishing through to assembly enable a smooth installation on the day.

Leaving the donators of the building, staff of Southwell, Principle, students & parents proud of the completed Sports Pavillion with the New Zealand made Paceracer outdoor Waterproof clock.
